Scissor Skills

Working on scissor skills does so much more than just plain scissor skills – if that makes sense. It helps strengthen fine motor skills which in turns help with shoe tying, writing, drawing, etc. I know it seems scary to allow a child to have a pair of scissors and a piece of paper, but I’m here to help you see that it really isn’t!

Easy play dough recipe

Play dough can get expensive after continuing to replace it. Check out this really easy play dough recipe you can make on your own. All the ingredients can be added to your grocery list.

Easy homemade play dough recipe. A great activity for a rainy day!

My kids adore sensory play. While I can sometimes feel like the mess is overwhelming, it really helps regulate my kids and their behavior. I will see them getting too antsy and will offer them sensory play. It’s great for hot summer days, rainy days, or days when it’s too cold to even look outside.

We have sensory bottles and sensory bins for them, but one of their favorite activities is play dough. This easy play dough recipe is super simple to throw together and your kids can make it their own by choosing their favorite color.

I find that using the gel food coloring gives it a much more bold color than the regular liquid color.

The best part about this recipe? It’s “edible!” It doesn’t taste very good (unless your kid loves lots of salt) but it’s okay if they eat it.

Easy play dough recipe

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • 1 tablespoon oil (I use coconut oil)
  • Food coloring/food coloring gel
  • 1 cup boiling water

Easy play dough recipe instructions

  • Mix together all the dry ingredients in a bowl.
  • Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
  • Add the food coloring/food gel to the boiling water.
  • Add the oil and water to the well and mix. (It’s going to look like you screwed up royally, but trust me, you did not. Let it sit for about 20 minutes and come back – it’s all good 🙂 )
  • You may need to add a little more oil if it’s too sticky! I honestly feel like it’s different each time I make it.

Keep it stored in an airtight container. How long it lasts depends on how often your kids play with it, but you can add oil or flour to adjust if you feel it’s wearing down. I have a giant bucket of 100 cookie cutters that my kids use to play with it. They were a Christmas gift (I requested) and I’m horrible at baking – so now they’re toys.
